There is still so much to do in eliminating stigma and ensuring people get the services they need. These staggering statistics show us that mental health is without doubt a critical economic issue for Australia.Įven more important than that, creating a mentally healthy workplace that is supportive and inclusive, that embraces difference and does not discriminate or stigmatise, can be a matter of life and death. Research shows one in five workers is likely to experience a mental health issue every year and untreated mental health conditions cost Australian businesses at least $10.9 billion annually in absenteeism, reduced productivity and compensation claims. We will also be working to ensure that workplaces are well equipped to foster resilience. Work has already begun on the first stage of developing this initiative, which will be designed and delivered in partnership with Early Childhood Australia and the youth mental health organisation headspace from 2018.
